Down With Tyranny has a well-written post on the inspiration for Paul Ryan's horrendous budget plan. If you know one name, Ayn Rand, you probably know all you need to know.
As an aside, I recall back in my college days trying to stomach some of the scribblings of Rand and her followers. I certainly knew a few fellow undergrads who had dreams of a Randian utopia. They acted much like those caught up in any of a number of common religious cults. There's only so much of the altar of selfishness that one should ever willingly be exposed to. There's something about the mindset (philosophy is a term that would give Rand way too much credit) of Rand and her ilk that seems to be antithetical to the way we humans evolved. We are social animals who depend upon each other in order to not only survive, but to thrive. We are a species, it would seem, where collective action and serving one another would be a positive rather than a negative phenomenon.
Speaking of serving others, it's time for me to get back to work.
